  • Dreams have ability to bend time and space, and create bizarre virtual worlds.
  • Sleep – sower THETA and DELTA waves.
  • PET scans show low brain activity.
  • Sleep occurs in cycles.
  • Two hours a night is devoted to sleeping.
  • Dreaming occurs in deep sleep but we forget these dreams immediately after waking up.
  • REM sleep is where we have our most vivid dreams.
  • Similar patterns of waves to those when we are awake.
  • During REM sleep, PONS is activated. The part of the brain where memory and emotions are stored is switched on = highly active.
  • The area where logic and critical thinking takes place is shut off (hence sporadic dreams).
  • Motor neurons in spine are shut down which causes temporary paralysis – prevents us acting out our dreams but we still feel emotions.
  • Theories:
ACTIVATION SYNTHESIS = dreams are meaningless – mixed up thoughts and memories during REM sleep.
THREAT SIMULATION = dreaming is a biological defense mechanism designed to simulate threatening events to give evolutionary advantage, by developing means to perceive and avoid them.
  • REM sleep strengthens memory, by forming neural connections.

  • Dream to fulfill our wishes:-
  • Freud: dreams are a collection of memories from subconscious minds – they have symbolic meanings which relate to fulfillment of subconscious wishes.
  • Freud: everything we remember when we wake up from a dream is a symbolic representation of our unconscious thoughts/urges/wishes.
  • By analysing remembered elements, the unconscious content will be revealed to our conscious mind – we can address psychological issues.
  • Dream to remember:-
  • Revise performance.
  • Dream to forget:-
  • Reverse learning: reviews connections and dumps useless ones, otherwise our brains would be full of useless thoughts.
  • Dream to keep brains working:-
  • Dreams may be a result of the brain’s need to create.
  • Dream to rehearse:-
  • Rehearse to evolve, practice fight or flight.
  • Dream to heal:-
  • Take edge off painful experiences, psychologically repair, look at situations from another point of view.
  • Dream to solve problems:-
  • Dreams can create limitless scenarios to grasp problems and create solutions – where the term ‘sleep on it’ comes from.
